Individual Counseling

Pensive WomanRecognizing the need for help and seeking counseling is a sign of strength and determination to lead a happier, more meaningful life. Consider seeking professional help if you:

• experience frequent feelings of sadness, anger or fear
• find yourself overusing food, alcohol or sex
• have a frequent rapid heart beat and shortness of breath which are not the symptoms of a medical illness
• are in a relationship that causes significant distress
• lost interest in everyday activities/hobbies and intimate relationships

Symptoms of Major Depression

DSM-IV lists the following criteria for Major Depressive Episode:
• Depressed mood
• Loss of interest or pleasure
• Significant sudden weight loss or weight gain
• Sleep problems (insomnia or hypersomnia)
• Restlessness or being “slowed down” as observed by others
• Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
• Inability to concentrate or make decisions
• Feelings of hopelessness or excessive guilt
• Recurrent thoughts of death
• Five or more of those symptoms have been present during the 2 week period or longer.

Symptoms of Burnout

Burnout is a state of mental and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged excessive stress:
• Irritability
• Insomnia
• Fatigue
• Resentfulness
• Feelings of being trapped
• Loss of motivation to “keep going” and feelings of detachment
• Withdrawal, isolation
• Cynicism

When you have used all your resources, when talking to friends and family does not make you feel any better, counseling may help you gain insight into underlying causes of your distress, find positive alternatives to overuse of food, alcohol or sex, and avoid mistakes made in the past.

In our busy, fast-paced world, emotional strain can lead to confusion and stress.
Depression, anxiety and multitude of medical conditions are either created or aggravated by stress. Individual therapy may help you eliminate or reduce stressful responses to life.

Please, be aware that current stress may trigger or aggravate the consequences of early childhood trauma or prolonged childhood abuse. I call it “I thought I was over it” syndrome. Sudden, unexplainable anxiety attacks, nightmares, feelings of worthlessness and depression are only some of the symptoms of resurfacing childhood traumas or PTSD.

If you are dealing with unresolved trauma, anxiety, depression, lack of assertiveness, low self-esteem or burnout, please call to see if I am the right therapist for you.
