Hypnosis

HypnosisWould you like to achieve and maintain your ideal weight, change unhealthy habits, increase self-confidence, reduce stress or anxiety, relieve chronic pain? Maybe you want to increase your motivation and improve performance? Hypnosis is a pleasant and relaxing way to manifest change in your life.

Hypnosis is a technique for inducing an altered state of consciousness known as trance. For centuries hypnosis has been used as a healing practice in cultures all over the world. Would you be surprised if I told you that trance is a natural state of mind experienced daily by everyone? You pass into a sate of hypnosis when you move from waking into sleep. Or, have you ever gotten so absorbed in reading a book that you haven’t noticed how much time has passed or were oblivious to your surroundings? How about driving down a freeway and arriving to your exit without a memory of how you got there? Daydreaming is also an example of self-induced trance state.  In hypnotherapy trance is achieved with the help of a hypnotherapist, for the purpose of facilitating the changes YOU want.

Characteristics of Hypnosis:

  • Highly focused attention – the human mind is a chatter-box. Buddhists refer to it as “monkey-mind”, constantly busy, jumping from one thought to another. Hypnosis stops this constant chatter, the white noise which prevents us from single focus.
  • Relaxation – hypnosis produces a deeply relaxed, pleasant state.
  • Responsiveness to suggestions – the part of our mind responsible for judging and critical thinking also quiets down in hypnosis. This is crucial for overcoming the resistance to change.

Resistance to Change

In our normal mind state we often unconsciously resist change. Why would we resist change if we know that old habits no longer serve us?

On a psychological level – our life experiences form and shape beliefs about ourselves and the world. For example, a person may have a deeply ingrained belief that all their efforts will lead to failure, or that they will always be abandoned by someone they love. Trying to succeed or getting involved in a committed relationship will lead to pain. Since the prime directive of UM is to preserve and protect us, changing old beliefs is perceived as a threat. Hence, people find themselves stuck no matter how much they want to change. Quieting the disbelieving, critical mind achieved in hypnosis, allows you to accept the idea of doing things differently.

On a physiological level, repetition of beliefs, thoughts and behaviors form neural pathways.  Just like you would walk on the well established path through the forest, neural impulses follow established neural pathways in the brain. The process of changing old ways is similar to wondering off the beaten path in the forest – it’s unsettling, and requires courage and determination.  It requires making a new passage, new path, literally – a new neural pathway.

(If every time you walk into the store you get a craving for peanuts; and every time you give into it, the neural pathway “store craving buying and eating peanuts", becomes stronger. If you struggle with losing weight this can be a problem. On the bright side of things, each time you chose - even sporadically, to ignore the craving, you are building and strengthening new neural connections.)

Hypnosis is a process of learning how to get into a trance. Once there, we have access to strengths and resources, without a constant interference of “monkey mind”.
